Who is Skookum Joe Mason?
Joe is portrayed as an outlaw and silent predator wanted by the Canadian Mounties. The official profile frames him as a stealth scout and close-range killer who can enter hostile areas without announcing himself.
Skookum Joe Mason stats and abilities
| Abilities | +10% Mining Speed, +15% Melee Damage, +10% Dodge, +2 Move Speed, +2 Defense, -1 Sleep Hour, +2 Stealth |
|---|---|
| Health | 100 |
| Energy | 90 |
| Encumbrance | 100 |
Joe’s base stats have no severe low point, and the ability list reinforces both avoidance and close combat. Mining speed gives him a reason to enter resource areas without turning him into a dedicated hauler.
Practical build direction
Favor stealth, movement and melee reliability. Scout the path before filling the pack, bypass fights that do not protect a resource or exit, and reserve stamina for disengagement. A stealth bonus only creates value when the player resists unnecessary confrontations.
Field note
Joe’s kit looks coherent on paper, but exact detection ranges and stealth break conditions still need in-game testing.
Practical expedition use
Use Skookum Joe for a stealth-and-melee route that values approach, movement and choosing the fight. His published bonuses support a quiet scout interpretation, but stealth break conditions and enemy awareness are still field questions. Carry an exit plan: a stealth bonus helps you avoid risk, it does not make a loud recovery or signal-fire sequence safe by itself.
Stealth rule: record what action caused detection and whether the route still extracted. Joe’s bonuses do not reveal exact awareness ranges or hidden reward effects.
Joe or Wade for a melee route?
Joe publishes a much stronger melee direction than Wade: +15% Melee Damage, +10% Dodge, +2 Move Speed, +2 Defense and +2 Stealth. Wade publishes only a small melee and defense bonus but is the free baseline every player can use. Choose Joe when the route depends on approach, avoidance and a close-range fallback; choose Wade when learning the system without adding a specialized roster decision.
Joe’s 100 Health and 100 Encumbrance are balanced, but his 90 Energy does not turn a dangerous route into an unlimited scout. Stealth value also depends on current detection behavior, which is not documented in enough detail to publish exact ranges. Test whether enemies notice movement, tools, combat and extraction actions differently before building a route around silence.
- Joe’s question: can this encounter be avoided before melee starts?
- Wade’s question: can the basic route be completed with fewer moving parts?
- Unknown: exact stealth break conditions in the current build.
