What can you play for free?
The official FAQ says players can download the game free in the Paydirt Launcher, enter the Game Lobby and head into Open Range without paying for gold prospecting. Free play includes the core survival loop: exploring the procedurally generated frontier, learning combat and gathering, visiting camps, trading, completing quests and uncovering locations.
Every player receives Wade Tornstrom as a free starting Pioneer. The Tutorial is also part of the free route and teaches navigation, survival combat, found weapons, buried resources, chopping, camping and trading. You can therefore learn whether the expedition loop suits you before deciding whether any optional purchase is useful.

Wade Tornstrom is the free Pioneer published for all players.
What can cost money?
The Terms describe Prospecting Mode as an optional module with payable features. It is the layer connected to finding gold with real-world withdrawal value where permitted. The base game remains separate.
| Item or feature | Is payment required? | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | No | Provides the main survival, exploration, combat and progression experience. |
| Prospecting Mode | Optional paid features | Adds access to the real-value gold prospecting system for eligible users. |
| Prospector’s Pass | Required for prospecting | Allows prospecting for a set duration. The FAQ says Pass lengths differ, but their in-game function does not. |
| Claims | Required for prospecting attempts | Each Claim creates another chance to prospect. Claims do not guarantee gold. |
| Additional Pioneers | Optional | The lobby offers multiple Pioneers; one character is not required to access the free core loop because Wade is included. |
| Gear or virtual resources | Varies | Greenbacks and other resources can support field preparation; current availability and prices belong to the live build. |
How much does Fatal Frontier 1869 cost?
The minimum price to start playing is $0. The public website does not currently publish a complete, stable price table for Pass durations, Claim bundles, Pioneers or other live-lobby purchases. Because these are Early Access offers and can change, quoting an unsupported price here would be less useful than telling players where to verify it.
Check the Game Lobby before paying
Review the exact item, duration, quantity, service fee, tax and final total shown immediately before payment. Take a screenshot if the purchase is material to you; the public FAQ is not a substitute for the live checkout.
The FAQ currently promotes a new-player package described as “$65 free,” consisting of a 72-hour Pass, 80 Claims and 1,500 Greenbacks. Treat that as a developer promotion, not cash, a permanent entitlement or a guaranteed current offer. Confirm the package in your own Game Lobby.
Can you get Claims without buying them?
The FAQ says Claims can be obtained in the Game Lobby and may also appear in Trading Posts, mining camps or as rewards from certain quests. It does not publish a guaranteed free-Claim rate or repeatable farming schedule. A player should not assume those sources will provide enough Claims for ongoing prospecting.
A Claim is an attempt, not a result. Buying or obtaining one does not guarantee gold, a successful Skill Check, extraction or payout. For the broader flow, read the Gold & Loot guide.
Are purchases refundable?
The Terms say charges are payable in advance and generally non-refundable except where applicable law requires otherwise. Sales tax may be collected, and an additional service fee may be added and disclosed before payment is finalized.
Payments must come from an account in the user’s own name and control. Processor, identity and location checks may apply, especially around Prospecting Mode. If advertising or promotional copy conflicts with the Terms, section 17.2 says the Terms control.
Tax and service fee
The final checkout may be higher than the displayed item price. Review the disclosed total before confirming.
Generally non-refundable
Do not treat an Early Access balance change or a disappointing expedition as an automatic refund reason.
Should you spend money?
Start with the free Tutorial and Open Range. Learn one safe route, try several ordinary quests, understand injury and extraction, and decide whether the base survival game is enjoyable without the money angle. Only then can you judge whether a time-limited Pass or additional Claim attempts have value for you.
Prospecting support does not mean an average player earns a profit. Time, failed Skill Checks, injuries, unsuccessful extraction, Pass duration, Claims and optional purchases all affect the result. This Wiki does not recommend a spend level or present Prospecting Mode as an investment.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Prospector’s Pass to play?
No. A Pass is required for optional gold prospecting, not for the base game.
Is Fatal Frontier 1869 free forever?
The current official pages call the base game free, but Paydirt reserves the right to update the game and its terms. Re-check the official site if the business model changes.
Are longer Prospecting Passes stronger?
The FAQ says there is no in-game functional difference between Passes. Longer durations are described as cheaper on a per-day basis, not more powerful.
Is the advertised $65 starter offer real cash?
The FAQ describes it as a package containing a 72-hour Pass, Claims and Greenbacks. It should not be described as $65 in withdrawable cash.
Can non-U.S. players use the paid prospecting feature?
The current Terms restrict Prospecting Mode by age and location. Read the Payout Methods guide before assuming a purchase or withdrawal feature is available where you live.
